USHL Draft Coverage- Ian McGilvrey

I have been contacted by sbnation.com to write up some profiles on players that may be drafted into the USHL this year in the USHL Entry Draft. I will be writing a profile almost every day leading up to the draft beginning with forwards, then on to defensemen, and finishing with goaltenders. These are in no particular order, as the Entry Draft is hard to predict. I haven't seen these players play either, so if you have seen them play and have something to add, please do. Enjoy!

Ian McGilvrey (Omaha AAA) is another undersized player with great numbers in AAA hockey. McGilvrey is 5'8"/165 which is a lot smaller than most of the players I've written about for this draft. I've never seen McGilvrey play, but I can almost guarantee that he uses his size to dart in and out of potential problems on the ice. This is one of the advantages of being a smaller player, although in most scouts' eyes, the negatives of a smaller player outweigh the positives. Omaha AAA plays in the North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL), which is pretty good competition. This season, McGilvrey played in 57 games in which he had 64 points, 20 of them goals and 44 of them assists, averaging over a point a game. McGilvrey was also a good all around player for Omaha, collecting 6 points on the powerplay and 4 points while his team was short handed. His size and number of assists conjure up images of Omaha Lancers star Matt White, who was recently named USHL player of the year. I definitely think McGilvrey will end up playing in the USHL next year, but I would also like to jump to another prediction when it comes to McGilvrey. I believe as a born Nebraskan, he will either end up on the Lincoln Stars or the Omaha Lancers, which both have a history of having native Nebraskans on their rosters. Just last year, Lincoln's captain was Matt Bruneteau, a defenseman from Omaha. The Lancers, on the other hand, had Omaha native Nick Oddo.

Please leave comments, I would love to hear them!

  1. Thanks for profiling these players on your blog. It is great to see this information prior to the draft. It will be interesting to see where these future players end up at.

  3. McGilvrey was selected for the '92-'93 USHL Combine All-Star game where he put up two goals to help his team pull out a win in Chicago.

Keep an eye peeled too this weekend (May 7-9) as the NAPHL will hold their Top Prospects Tournament in Wenatchee, Washington. The tournament, which will be held in conjunction with the North American Hockey League’s (NAHL) Robertson Cup Championship Tournament and feature the top U18 players in the NAPHL league.

McGilvrey was also selected for the NAPHL Top Prospects Tournament.

Keep it clean, and don't attack individual players.
